Fighting to Protect
the Pinelands
Under Assault from Day One
That's the sad truth. Ever since the Pinelands Comprehensive Management Plan was adopted in 1980, forces have been at work to weaken it and, in some instances, simply bury it.

New Jersey's Pine Barrens is a globally unique ecosystem and recognized as a UN Biosphere Reserve. It is home to plant and animal species found only here, and it is a storehouse to some 17 trillion gallons of fresh water that supports millions of people and is the lifeblood of the bays and estuaries along the Delaware River and the Jersey shore.
Nonetheless, over the years elected officials of both major parties have often failed to stand up when needed to ensure that the Pinelands protections aren't weakened. The Pinelands today is at risk of death by a thousand cuts.
